"Behutsame Stadterneuerung" Leipzig

Gentle urban regeneration

Spread over several years, the project addressed derelict industrial and residential sites in the Wilhelminian districts of the city of Leipzig. The collapse brought with it the opportunity to employ alternative open space concepts to bring new qualities and standards to the Wilhelminian districts: "Space and greenery instead of constriction and ruins" was the declared goal. The conscious removal of entire blocks, the rededication of large industrial areas and their adjoining rail links provide space for greenery and make neighbouring residential areas significantly more attractive once again. In the capacity of a "consultant architect" we designed and realised concepts for the redevelopment of private open spaces following the demolition of derelict buildings. In the scope of the development programmes (URBAN II, urban renewal etc.) state funding was used to create green areas that can be used by the public over a long period of time. The projects ranged from individual plots (for example Gießerstr.) to large residential blocks (for example Kuhturmstr.) and industrial sites (for example Rolf-Axen-Str.).
