Redevelopment of the riverside areas of the Bega Canal in the city of Timisoara, Romania

Conceptual planning

The largest master plan and development plan of the city of Timisoara to date was drafted in the scope of a co-operation project and supervised by the German colleagues at GTZ.The development plan (PUZ) for the Bega Canal and adjoining park was urgently required as a demonstration project for new qualities in public spaces. The zone along the Bega represents the centrepiece of the urban green areas, with its favoured location on the river making it a popular choice for various different construction projects. With the aid of the development plan it is possible to regulate the utilisation of the plots in a legally secure framework in the long term. This is a first step towards achieving a higher quality along the Bega, a form of “Bulevard Verde”. The project was necessary in the scope of the preparation for the EU funding period for the revitalisation of the bankside area of the river and restructuring of the real estate and public park areas.
